The 2019 studio meeting of experimental rock duo Pinkish Black and free jazz trio Yells At Eels might have seemed an odd pairing, but it was based on relationships dating back two decades. Pinkish Black’s Jon Teague first met Aaron and Stefan González when the siblings used to host hardcore punk shows at the home of their parents, Carol and Dennis González. By the time Teague and his bandmate Daron Beck began their collaboration, Aaron and Stefan had been playing with Dennis in Yells at Eels for half a dozen years, and the musicians shared a high mutual regard.
At the time of the long-mooted “Pinkish Eels” sessions (released on Ayler as “Vanishing Light in the Tunnel of Dreams”), Teague, Beck, and Dennis González were all dealing with significant health issues. Awareness of mortality hovered in the air and informed the music the five created together. In the wake of Dennis’s passing on March 15, 2022, all the surviving participants agreed to release this special remix of “Slow Cascade of Tears” – the last song Dennis played with Aaron and Stefan after 20 years of sonic adventures and a lifetime of love – as a memorial and a token of appreciation to followers of Dennis’s music who want to make monetary contributions to assist his family.
The remix brings to the fore the droning sonic undertow that is the foundation of Pinkish Black’s music, which seethes with powerful emotion and drama like German opera, using sonic texture in place of harmonic movement to enfold and overpower the listener. Dennis’s electronically treated trumpet calls out like a beacon from within the spectral swirl of melodies and is gradually subsumed in a thunderous crescendo – the sound of things coming apart, the specter of grief and loss offset by the fleeting beauty of life in the dying echoes.
